Steve Jobs in the Media Lab

Written on August 28th, 2011, by Gus Rancatore

First of all Steve Jobs didn’t die.  He simply gave up day to day responsibilities to become Apple’s chairman of the board.  I have an iPhone, an Air and love the cartoons.  But he never came into the store for a cone despite our location close to MIT.

But I did have one very short direct observation of Jobs, some years ago.  Now he’s famous for wearing turtlenecks and blue jeans but there was a period when he dressed with a French flair.  He even had a cool haircut.  He was quite noticeable when I saw him waiting for an elevator in what was then the new Media Lab, the Weisner Building designed by I.M. Pei.  If you had a still camera, or only had a still camera he was the well turned out image then being projected by the press.  But if you rode the elevator with him he was a bundle of tics and twitches, with a little Gates-like davening thrown in.

Lee Shulman RIP

Written on August 26th, 2011, by Gus Rancatore

Lee Shulman died on August 25.  Lee was our landlord for many years.  My first partner Kurt and I met him when we visited his office to inquire about renting what has been our only home here at 899 Main Street.  Lee’s offices were then located above a Greek pizzeria in an old and old-fashioned building across from The Christian Science Center.  Boston childens’ television host Rex Trailer had an office in the building.  Lew Archer or Sam Spade would have been comfortable in both the building and the neighborhood.

Over the years Toscanini’s prospered as Lee’ tenant.  He became our insurance agent and we worked with each of his three sons, Bill, Steve and Ken.  Today Hundreds of friends mourned Lee at his funeral at Temple Emanuel in Newton.  Each of his sons spoke well about their father. I learned that Lee had been born in East Boston, and left an hour early for school so he could fight his way to class.  He served in Europe during World War 2.   Ken described him as being illogically extreme in his moderation about all things except for his love for his wife.

He believed that nothing improved without effort.  He was ten minutes early to at least one meeting every day and the habit added years to his life.  His son Ken has written about sports of every kind and described his Dad as playing “small ball”, the term for baseball that features singles and execution of fundamentals.  His exemplary life  filled a large building with mourners.  He did a great deal to help us and our family shares the Shulman’s loss.

Sari and Jeni make ice cream in the backyard

Written on August 14th, 2011, by Gus Rancatore

Cambridge celebrity Sari Boren had a backyard dessert party on Saturday where she and friends used recipes from the new cookbook by the owner of Jeni’s Ice Cream.  Jeni’s is located in Columbus, Ohio  and sells pints at Formaggio’s.  Both of which constitute endorsements.   Jeni’s uses a recipe base that is similar to the unique gelati of Sicily, which is thickened with starch or starches.  You can also sample this type of  gelato at Oleana on Hampshire St. where pastry chef Maura Kilpatrick’s marvelous’s list is often a survey of frozen desserts form different nations.  Jeni’s cookbook is a good story about a woman finally succeeding with her own business and an excellent guide to making ice cream at home.  Sari and her friends made a variety of flavors including what the book calls Kona Stout and a Basil Pine Nut ice cream.  The book notes the importance of quality vendors and the happiness of being part of a vital food community.  Columbus has long had a reputation as the home of many fast food concepts and the book describes a great artisanal food center.

One surprising complaint is that some copies of the book may be printed with non-waterproof inks so while working in a wet kitchen you can discover that you own a collection of watercolor recipes.
